The Baton Rouge Sustainable Transportation Action Committee (STAC) pilot project demonstrates the feasibility and value of a collaborative, data-driven process to identify major areas of need and advance infrastructure improvements that enable people to safely walk, bike and ride transit. The pilot project focuses on a three square mile area bordered by North Acadian Thruway (west), Lobdell (east), Gus Young and Greenwell Springs (north), and Government Street (south). Data describing existing infrastructure; transit stops, shelters and usage patterns; intersection features; history of crashes involving pedestrians or bicyclists; and health indicators will be mapped for the area. Additional input will be obtained from community engagement activities and survey results. 

Better Block BR Perkins Overpass, a demonstration project that temporarily transformed two blocks of Perkins Road to showcase how street improvements, public spaces, culture and street life can improve community connection and local commerce, took place April 23-24, 2016. The demonstration promoted multi-modal transportation infrastructure (transportation for all users, including pedestrians, bicyclists, motorists and transit riders of all ages and abilities), and business access that result in a vibrant neighborhood. The results demonstrated a destination for people who may walk, bike, or take the trolley to Perkins Road Overpass. 

Groups across Baton Rouge joined people from around the world to temporarily transform parking spaces into public parks and other social spaces, as part of an annual event called "PARK(ing) Day." 

CPEX worked with residents from Bernard Terrace, Capital Heights, Valley Park, and Webb Park to demonstrate 11 different small-scale improvements throughout these neighborhoods that would calm traffic, improve connectivity and increase bike and pedestrian access.  Residents and the city continue to work together to implement their priority projects.

A project of the FutureBR Implementation Team, hosted by the Mayor's office of the City of Baton Rouge - Parish of East Baton Rouge, Center for Planning Excellence, and Mid City Redevelopment Alliance, Better Block BR: Government Street was a two day demonstration project along Government Street in Mid City on April 13th and 14th, 2013, exploring possibilities for transforming the corridor into a vibrant and safe destination for pedestrians and cyclists, while maintaining quality road design that optimizes traffic flow and access to businesses.

Louisiana’s Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) adopted a Complete Streets policy in 2010, which has been ranked the second strongest policy in the nation by the National Complete Streets Coalition. New Orleans was the first city in Louisiana to adopt a Complete Streets policy on the local level, and the CPEX CONNECT Coalition continues to champion Complete Streets policy adoption in Louisiana cities, parishes and regions as a top policy priority.

The Complete Streets Policy Manual is a free resource outlining the steps to policy adoption and featuring a step-by-step look at the New Orleans policy process. Elected and appointed officials, as well advocacy groups, interested in adopting Complete Streets policies on the local level are encouraged to download this manual to learn more about how to adopt Complete Streets legislation.

Too many lives are lost on Louisiana streets. Parents are afraid to allow their children to walk or bike to school because the routes are unsafe. Employees don't see biking as a viable option because the network is unprotected and incomplete.

CPEX released Danger Zones: A Summary of Pedestrian Fatalities in Louisiana to raise awareness around pedestrian safety and to provide relevant data to support Complete Streets projects throughout the state.

Motor vehicles dominate transportation policy in Louisiana, but as vehicular deaths have decreased, pedestrian deaths continue to rise.

CPEX partnered with OneVoice and the Louisiana Public Health Institute to produce Walk + Ride: A Resource Guide to Funding Pedestrian, Bicycle and Complete Streets Projects in Louisiana. The Guide is a user-friendly resource, empowering local leaders to pursue pedestrian and bicycle project and funding for their communities.

Founded in 2011 with funding from the Ford Foundation, the Surdna Foundation, and the Greater New Orleans Foundation, CPEX's CONNECT Coalition aligned efforts by various stakeholders to improve network connectivity for transportation, jobs, and housing in the Baton Rouge to New Orleans superregion.
