Summary

The Town of Jean Lafitte, LA is located at the extreme southeast of the state and has experienced its share of flooding from storm surge, heavy rain events, and relative sea level rise. Due to climate change, this risk is only increasing.

To address this growing exposure, Jean Lafitte’s leadership is using both structural risk reduction measures — such as levees, locks, and pumps — and planning and implementation measures — such as community development plans and development regulations.

Through the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Silver Jacket Program, CPEX worked with the Town of Jean Lafitte to develop the Resilient Jean Lafitte Flood Preparedness Toolkit. The Toolkit provides risk data, guidelines for flood preparedness design and living with water, and model regulations to reduce flood risk, all tailored to Jean Lafitte’s specific needs and context.

Outcome

The Town of Jean Lafitte has adopted the Toolkit recommendations for ordinances that serve to decrease flood risk and reduce impacts of development on local hydrology.
